Montrose is a small town in Southern Colorado, located about an hour east of Denver. The population was 5,541 at the 2010 census. Montrose is the county seat for Douglas County. It is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area and lies within the San Miguel Valley wine country. The name Montrose comes from two Spanish phrases, "montaña" meaning mountain and "rosa" meaning red. The first settlers to this area were Mexicans who came overland through Mexico in 1849. They founded a rancho called Rancho de la Esperanza (Land of Hope). In 1875, Hosea Butterfield organized the Utah & Northern Colorado Railway to move coal and other minerals up the Animas River valley from Aspen to Denver. When construction began on roadbeds through Montrose Canyon, residents objected because they worried that their homes would be destroyed if the track crossed their property. This led to one of America's most famous civil rights cases: Brown v Board of Education (1954). In 1870, James Buchanan wrote his book "The Rocky Mountains: Their Physical characteristics." He hypothesized that these mountains were formed when molten rock called magma cooled under Earth's surface 1 million years ago and that they had been preserved as a natural barrier against human incursions for untold generations. Some people in this time believed that what we now call Rockies were actually younger mountains carved by glaciers long ago! In 1880, John Wesley Powell made his first trip up these hills during his survey work for USGS in cooperation with Ulysses S Grant’s army Corps of Engineers tasked with developing CentralColorado routes for mining companies interested in striking it rich near Cherry Creek Falls and Pikes Peak NP! In 1865, Mariano Castro discovered goldfields at Soudan Hill just south of where Montrose now stands; he named them Durango because he thought it resembled a Hindu god known as Dakshinamurthy or “lord of all India” These new discoveries quickly turned into a stampede by prospectors seeking treasure while also stirring up hostility between local ranchers and miners who wanted access to land undisturbed by anyone but themselves since prior settlement times! By January 1st 1870 only 10 men remained alive on Soudan Hill trying to extract over $1 million worth of gold Nuggets which has yet today not been found anywhere close enough either due mainly to present day technology or location etc; however there are some tantalizing clues such as 2 large lead balls still unaccounted for despite numerous search efforts including helicopter flights perminently!! Unfortunately too many things changed too fast including Public sentiment which got upped when General Crook arrived looking like he knew best after being insulted by locals regarding operations conducted without their knowledge(what could have been termed then as Green Revolution) so much so Ranchero resistance became so strong fellow prospectors abandonedmining operations leaving behind vast mineral resources unappreciated until recently….. However history does not always reflect our wishes or desires especially when those in power don’t share our point-of-view!!!!!

Montrose was a small town in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Montrose ski resort and is adjacent to Aspen. The first people to live in what is now Montrose were the Hennepin tribe of Native Americans who lived around the Clear Creek Reservoir. The land where Montrose now stands was part of this reservation until 1876 when it was sold to George Hearst and James Buchanan Forbes for $5,000. In 1881, General James Hagedorn moved his army from Fort Lyon into present-day Arapahoe County after being ordered by President Ulysses S. Grant to help suppress a Mexican uprising in New Mexico. He found new grazing lands in southeastern Arapahoe County and began leasing them out for farming and ranching purposes. In 1886, he founded the Townsite Company with some other Van Dorn investors to develop these properties into townships that would be governed by commissioners chosen from among themselves. One of Hagedorn's first decisions as town president was that all residents must wear badges which identified them as "citizens." This policy helped prevent anything like community violence or intermarriage between different groups of people from arising during early years in Montrose while everyone had their own individual goals and interests within the townspeople group as well as within their own social circles outside of town limits (i.e., not just within walking distance). The first post office opened in 1892; however, it failed because there wasn't enough business activity to support a mail service; instead, citizens sent letters directly to each other through personal messengers (1892-1903). Montrose experienced its greatest growth during World War I due to its strategic location on Routt Road between Aspen and Denver making it easy for troops stationed at Fort Lyon or nearby training camps access food and supplies easily without having to go far away or travel through hostile territory. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home but still wanted their share of what had been developed here so they formed their own local businesses such as hardware stores (1922), lumberyards (1925), printing presses (1920s), restaurants (1927-30) etc.; all while continuing largescale residential development which continued until shortly before Montrose's incorporation into Aspen upon George Hearst's death in 1954 whose estate donated most ofmontrosescripture Rowland House property including much later construction including modern day hotels - both THE ROWLAND HOUSE HOTELS & CONVENTION CENTER AND WESTMINSTER MOTEL are ON THAT Property!
