The first Europeans to see Montrose were Spanish traders who passed through during their travels between Santa Fe and Mexico in 1540-1541. In 1802, John Muir visited Montrose while traveling from Pueblo to Aspen. Muir's journal entry for July 9th noted that "the people here are what we should call Mormons." In 1863, General James Halleck ordered all Mormon troops east of the Arkansas River destroyed because he believed they were aiding Rebel forces in Kansas. The order was roundly denounced by some residents as unlawful and unconstitutional; it led to Bloody Kansas which created a simmering tension between pro-Mormon settlers and anti-Mormon insurgents known as " Kidnappers' Kettle" or "The Rangers." On March 12, 1865, prominent citizens of Montrose gathered outside the courthouse to demand an end to hostilities when Confederate Major General Jubal Early made an appearance with his unit of 5th Missouri Infantry leading a column along Bear Butte Road towards town. Eager locals mixed arms and opened fire on Early's plundering troopers as they dispersed back down Bear Butte Road; one trooper was killed and several others were wounded before retreating back into Missouri without further damage or gain. This action helped define local militia efforts against Confederate forces throughout much of southern Weld County until May 29th when Union troops arrived at the town hall successfully rescuing all remaining Mormon fugitives from nearby Fort Bridger (now called Black Mesa State Monument). After years of conflict between pro-Mormon settlers (known as "The Saints") and anti-Mormon insurgents (known as "Kidnappers'), most inhabitants of Montrose came together in 1970s to redevelop what had been rural farmland into a small business community with heavy industry including aluminum smelting operations since 1957; today, many businesses still operate out of old buildings near downtown where Route 91 joins Interstate 25 just south of town limits
