Montrose, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of southern Colorado. It is located on the eastern edge of the Montrose Mining District and straddles the 1,500-foot (400-meter) high peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 6,568 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Montrose were Native Americans. They hunted and gathered food near present day Highway 27 and Indian Creek. In 1859, John C. Garfield who had been killed in 1881 during his last campaign as US President. This discovery led to a large influx of settlers into what would become Montrose during those years; most were men prospecting for gold or silver acetate crystals that were often found along creek beds or near springs where water could be drawn up to treat it with lime before being sold commercially as fertilizer or construction aggregate.
