Montrose is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot on what is now Montrose soil was John Parmenter in 1869. He and his wife, Maria, were prospectors looking for coal seams in what is now eastern Weld County when they discovered oil shale under the surface. They named their new land "Montrose" after their home county of Scotland. Oil production began in the early 1920s in Montrose and other surrounding counties and businesses soon followed suit due to tight security around petroleum reserves. In 1951, Montrose became an incorporated city with its own police department and fire departments; it remains one of only a few municipalities in CO with full municipal control over all aspects of government including education, economic development, public safety & infrastructure planning and zoning regulations! In 2013-2014 both USDOC (Department of Revenue) and City Council approved a plan which would have annexed adjacent rural landowners to form 4 large plat areas totaling 7 miles long by 2 miles wide within city limits – this would have allowed for increased housing development along well known east-west streets while also opening up much more land currently zoned as agricultural or rural to residential use! The annexation proposal was met with strong opposition from many residents who felt that too much growth without input from those impacted would be detrimental to their quality of life & access to essential services! In response to community objection & pressure from Mayor Joseph Gianaris & City Councilmember Steve LeVine two amendments were made allowing for: 1) No annexation if purchases exceed $100K per acre2) Withdrawal of application if purchase does not exceed $1M per acre3) Transferral authority from City Council to USDOC if purchase exceeds $2M per acre!! Despite these amendments being passed overwhelmingly by City Council members despite intense opposition from some residents& grocers who feel they are being forced out OF THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY!, Mayor Gianaris announced he will appeal the decision!! This marks yet another instance where citizens Loudly Protest OutsideCity Halls Yet Rarely Get What They Want!!!
