The current post office building was built in 1928 and replaced a previous building that was destroyed by fire. Montrose is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose was founded in 1872 by George Montrose and his brother-in-law John Nolen as a trading post on the Ute River. In 1895, it became a city after it was annexed by Fort Collins. The economy has been based on agriculture since its founding; however, industry has grown increasingly important in recent decades due to advances in technology and digital media. The Dawson School District serves Montrose schools with kindergarten through twelfth grade; El Paso High School provides high school instruction from ninth through twelveth grades. Today's community takes its name from George Montrose, who donated land for the town and helped found it in 1872: "George Montrose established this place here several years ago while he was out prospecting." In honor of him, the current courthouse building (built 1912) features an inscription reading "In Memory of George Montrosse Who Donation Led To establishment Of This Place".
