Montrose is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Montrose is located in Routt County, about 26 miles east of Fort Collins and 24 miles north of Greeley. Montrose was founded on July 6, 1876 by George A. Montrose and his family from Kansas City, Missouri. The original name for the town was "Wichita". The post office called Montrose "Cottonwood" from 1879 to 1886; "Dorset" from 1886 to 1907; and finally "Montrose" from 1907 to 1910. In 1908, Montrose became the site of the first electric light plant in Colorado when the Colorado Electric Light Company built a plant on Main Street. In 1915, Glenmore Dam made possible irrigation for much of northeastern Routt County which had been dry since before European settlement began in that area (the current water supply begins arriving here in 1865). During World War II, many businesses and residents fled during the war because they were unable to get food or munitions due to rationing policies instituted by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal programs intended to help those struggling through difficult times during peacetime America's biggest conflict ever fought with other countries than Europe/Germany/Italien/Austria etc... Businesses closed down rapidly after Pearl Harbor because there were no more wartime orders coming in, let alone money available for purchasing goods needed for wartime production like lights and radios... apartments started popping up all over town quickly fill up with people who couldn't find jobs anywhere else but inside their buildings... post offices which continued serving until 1943 finally stopped mailing October 7th that year along with all other government agencies
