By 1934, when Neighborhoods Act repealed municipal boundaries within cities and towns, Montrose had grown to encompass all of Arapahoe County except for Golden, which continued to exist as an independent municipality until it merged with Montrose in 1965. During World War II, Montrose supported military activity by manufacturing munitions at its local munitions plant. After the war ended, the plant closed and many jobs were lost as a result. However, since then, many businesses have opened up in downtown Montrose thanks to new zoning rules that allow for more density in older neighborhoods.
