Montrose, Colorado is a town located in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Montrose is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Montrose was Joshua Chamberlain in 1847. In 1869, A.G. French and his family arrived and soon after founded the Northern Pacific Railway company's Kremmerer depot to serve the community and surrounding area. Montrose native Archibald Macdonald was an American journalist who wrote for "The New York Times" from 1888 until his death in 1945. He is also buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Montrose. In 1903, Jens Jensen started a printing shop on Main Street which became one of the most successful businesses in town and remain so to this day. His son Poul Andersen continued the business until it closed in 1984 due to economic conditions; however, their legacy remains as one of the most successful small businesses in town history. Other notable local businesses include Montrose Realty Company (founded by Harry Carney), First National Bank (founded by Charles Schneidman), The Grapeseed Cafe (owned and operated by Dick Hahn since 1978), Keystone Broadcasting Corporation (the predecessor of KMGH-TV) and The Montrose News Chronicle (established 1966). As a result of its location near downtown Denver as well as its close proximity to other major metropolitan areas such as Kansas City and Phoenix, Montrose has seen a significant growth rate over recent years both economically and socialally; however, some residents have voiced concern about gentrification that they feel has taken place without their consent or notification.

Montrose, Colorado was first settled in 1868 by men from the Kansas Territory. The town was named for General John C. Montrose, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a colonel in the Union army. The town grew quickly, and by 1886 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1908 Montrose became an incorporated city. The early residents of Montrose were farmers and their families. They built small frame homes near the water's edge or on points overlooking the river. Some of these homes remain standing today, including one which is now used as a museum. In addition to its farming activities, Montrose also became known for its spinning mills and lumberyards. In 1907 the first post office in Montrose opened; at that time it was located at what is now 20th Avenue and Park Row. Montrose's growth continued into the 1960s and 1970s; during this time it grew to become one of Colorado's most populous cities with a population of over 100,000 people. During this time, much progress was made within the city limits; such areas as Commerce Boulevard (now Interstate 25) were constructed while other areas such as Central Park were developed into lush neighborhoods complete with swimming pools and tennis courts.
