Montrose is a small town in Logan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose is located on the eastern edge of Logan County and is bordered by Asotin to the north, Longmont to the east, Thornton to the south, and Northglenn to the west. The first people who lived in what is now Montrose were Native Americans who used it as a hunting ground for deer and other game. A post office called Montrose was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1896 two Panic Schools were built in what are now Montrose and Asotin because of an economic recession that had hit both towns hard. In 1902 businessman George Wickersham donated land near what is now downtown Montrose for a shopping center that would include several stores and a movie theater. The town's first school was built on this site in 1903; it served as a mission church until being replaced by present day Main Street School in 1954. During World War I local businesses produced munitions for munitions plants around Denver; many of these products ended up ending up exported to Europe where they created jobs for locals but also raised prices on American consumers. In 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson made his famous speech announcing America's entry into World War I, he specifically mentioned that "the production of munitions here [in] Colorado will be especially important" due to its location within easy striking distance of major military bases across North America.
