The Montrose Volunteer Fire Department has been providing firefighting services in the town of Montrose, Colorado since 1887. In 1919, the department was organized as a part of the Denver-Aurora Fire Division and began using tanks to fight fires. The department's first helicopter flew in 1966. In 1976, the department adopted its current name, the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department. The department is made up of firefighters from both departments as well as volunteer members from surrounding communities. Montrose is home to one of the most active military deployment gift history in Colorado Springs, with the city hosting more than 25% of all military deployments that have taken place in our state (2010). As a result, Montrose has become known for being an important community that supports military service and donations to organizations such as Operation Home Front and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The community also produces eggs and honey for local consumption as well as cigarettes and cigars for export to other parts of the country. In recent years, Montrose has seen an increase in tourism with visitors coming to enjoy its history, culture and attractions such as sites like Hill Country Park (a nature preserve close by) which offers hiking trails through rolling hills covered in oak trees dating back to 1853 when it was part of what was then called Tellico Creek Township. Montrose is a small town in Colorado, located in the Arapaho and Eagle counties. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Western Plains region. The first post office in Montrose was established on December 12, 1868, but no records exist to support this claim. The current post office was established on May 15, 1907. Montrose's name comes from George Montrose, a settler who platted the area in 1875. George would later become one of the founders of Denver. The original community site was near what is now County Road 6 and Highway 24 today. Todays' intersection of County Roads 6 and 24 formed when US 64 bypassed Montrose in 1957-58. When Interstate 25 bypassed Montrose in 1997, US 64 re-routed east through the town center and routed south along Highway 24 instead which has remained that way ever since (though I-25 still travels through downtown). US 64 Alternate forms an almost complete loop around town making it easy to get here from anywhere along its length; while also providing some nice scenic views as you drive by!
