Montrose is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. The Montrose School District serves the town and several surrounding villages. The name "Montrose" originates from a variant spelling of "Montezuma." A post office called Montezuma was established in 1876, and remained in operation until it closed in 1963. The first settlers to what is today Montrose were people from eastern Kansas who founded a ranch in 1865. They brought with them horses, cattle, pigs, and wheat which they planted along present-day Ute Creek. In 1870 another group of pioneers arrived from Missouri and built a log cabin on the east side of Ute Creek near present day Switzerland Road. This settlement became known as New Germany after German immigrants settled there two years earlier. In 1872 pioneer John Ferguson started plowing land southeast of present day Montrose on what would become Keystone Ranch which later became part of New Mexico Territory when that state was created out of western Kansas and eastern Nebraska on December 28, 1862. On July 26, 1875 he sold his interest in Keystone Ranch to James Hedden for $1,000 cash plus 8 shares of stock worth $10 each which he received delivery of on August 5th same year under guarantee by United States Commissioner JnoT P Smithson who also purchased all remaining shares within 60 days thereafter for $10 each or face an auction held at Montrose hotel where bids were accepted by Elisha Kapp who offered to purchase all remaining shares at $15 per share payable within 10 days following receipt thereof). On October 4th 1880 Hedden sold his interest in Keystone Ranch to George Waddell for $3,-$2 less than initial offer and received delivery of title deed on October 12th same year upon expiration (due date)of 300 days statutory period provided by law allowing such sale without prior offering or solicitation by purchaser or seller having knowledge thereof.. At this time Keystone Ranch consisted only of 1/2 mile wide strip running along creek bed containing about 40 acres surveyed & plowed white earth & barns etc situatedabout three miles west/northwest corner Of current village lot line
