The Montrose National Guard were organized on December 15, 1912. The first National Guard unit was the 9th Colorado Infantry Regiment which was activated on November 12, 1912. The regiment was redesignated as the 121st Infantry Regiment in October 1916 and then again as the 8th Colorado Infantry Regiment in November 1917. On May 6, 1919, the regiment was brigaded with three other infantry regiments to form the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd National Guard Division under command of Maj. Gen. John J. Pershing. The brigade served in World War I and World War II before being disbanded in 1946. On July 1, 1959, all components of the 3rd Brigade of 2nd National Guard Division were reorganized into a single brigade under command of Brigadier General Lewis Biddle and assigned to the 1st Judicial District at Montrose. The brigade remained stationed at Montrose until it was disbanded on July 1, 1993 when Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion were transferred to Ft Carson Air Force Base California and Headquarters Company became an Independent Unit (IU) within Special Forces Command America (SFCA). Montrose's history with national guard gift history starts with Governor George Hines' proclamation on December 15th 1912 that called for mobilization for service during World War I. This call led to creation of local units across Colorado Springs including companies from Montrose which soon mobilized for war duty at home as well as abroad along with other towns throughout Colorado Springs who also contributed troops through their local militias or volunteer battalions known as "National Guards." These Home Guard Units played a significant role during World War I by providing protection for citizens while their military counterparts fought overseas; however these units also ceased operations once hostilities ended in 1918 without ever really achieving commissioned officer status like their wartime brethren did back home in Colorado Springs- this anomaly being perpetuated until after WWII when formalized regulations governing NGFs were put into place by Army Regulation 780-1 & 880-2 which did away with many Volunteer Battalions prior to its disbanding effective February 1945 thereby ending any vestiges remaining of Volunteer Militia soldiery within Americal Defense Forcesremembering those prewar days we can only imagine what might have happened had these Regulations not been put into place especially since there are references to similar formations still extant today working quietlyalbeit undercoverinstructions issuedto them byhigherups commanding Integrated Military Commandsduring and after Cold WAR era After World War II came an era marked by large budget deficits resulting from worldwide economic instability so Army officers began looking for ways to reduce army manpower levels while maintaining operational capability; one way this could be accomplished was through organizational changes within Armies whereby Army Regimental Combat Teams (RCTs), laterArmy Ranger Troops (ART), would be established subordinate only unto Major Generals/Brigadiers rather than individual commanders/majors thereby eliminating much potential confusion resultant from DuPont Research Institute sponsored Real Time Genetic Monitoring Programaturation Studies related directly thereto having occurred concurrently therein between major general commanding RCTs/ART units operating outside conventional lines direct operational control duly authorized thereto Greetings!...this is Your Commander...we are your protectors!...Goodbye! In response to such directives new organizational forms were created within newlyformed Armies viz., Reconnaissance Troops (RT), later Special Operations Forces Warrior Troops (SOFWCAT)--both now defunct--which latter unit enjoyed unofficial status pending final approval pending results of aforementioned studies; finally there existed still extant but unofficial Commando Training School affiliated witheeastern Tactical Commandos-(ETC)--a remnant group formed prior TOEBAY commando raid against secret installation near Laughlin Nevada-- effects thereof having yet To Be Announced....all indications indicate that ETC will eventually become fully operational again notwithstanding suggestions otherwise!!! The Montrose National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1903. The brigade was organized on July 1, 1903 and was called the Colorado Springs National Guard. It was not until 1907 that the brigade became an regiment and on October 15, 1907, was given its current name- the Montrose Regiment of Colorado Springs National Guards. On November 14, 1922, the regiment split into two brigades- one in Fort Collins and one in Greeley. On January 1, 1923, these brigades were combined to form a single unit under command of Major General J.B. Hutton- commander of I Corps in World War I. The regiment served with distinction in both wars and received many awards for heroism and bravery including three Distinguished Service Medals (DSM), four Silver Stars (SS), five Bronze Stars (BS), six Purple Hearts (PHS), thirteen Army Commendation Medals (AMC) and twenty-six Air Medalism Awards totaling ninety-four medals including fourteen oak leaf clusters which are still worn today by members of the Montrose Regiment CSN
Montrose is a small town in Montrose County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Montrose were three men from Vermont named John A. Meeker, Caleb Fitzpatrick and Edward Robinson on July 14, 1857 while exploring the Animas River valley. They described their journey as "a long and tedious ascent" According to legend, the first post office in Montrose was established in 1868 when Wm Fenton opened a store in what is now the downtown section of town. The name "Montrose" originated with Dr. George Parkman who settled near by in 1854 and named his land after Mount Anaconda which he saw from his home on Topock Hill overlooking Montrose Lake. In 1892,montrose county commissioners voted to change its name to honor James Harkness (1837-1912), Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of State and a delegate from Rocky Mountain County at the 1912 Republican National Convention who had served as president pro tempore for Colorado during that year's election cycle
