Montrose, Colorado is a small town located in Gunnison County, Colorado. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gunnison County. The name Montrose comes from a location on the East Fork of the Green River called Mount Rose. The first settlers in what is now Montrose were farmers who moved to the area in 1868 after filing a claim on land that had been granted to them by Ute and Navajo tribes. In 1876, two brothers named George and John Waugh settled in Montrose after moving from Illinois. They opened a general store and post office which remained in operation until 1907. There were also three churches located in Montrose at that time: First Baptist Church (1876), Methodist Episcopal Church (1907), and Presbyterian Church (1910). In 1911, Montrose became one of sixteen townships organized within Gunnison County when it was created from portions of Pueblo County. The following year, there were only seventy-six residents living in its primary villages including main Street and surrounding agricultural areas; however, this number increased to over one hundred by 1916 due to an influx of African American refugees during World War I who had come seeking opportunity and freedom in what was then America's "race riots". During World War II, much activity took place within Montrose as part of the military industrial complex manufacturing munitions for America's war effort. One particularly large project involved building an airfield adjacent to Main Street which would serve as home to both Air Force Base El Centro and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point before being closed down during the war years due to lack of use or investment by either agency. Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1959,montrose has undergone several changes with respect to demographics, economy, transportation modes etc... This Municipality has seen growth averaging over 5% per annum since2009 while maintaining close communalism with adjoining Village councils which have helped foster strong ward/village ties across different economic sectors while still providing opportunities for cross-pollination between various sectors through sister businesses/ cultural events etc... The first European to visit Montrose was a Spanish conquistador, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, on July 15, 1540. He named the place San Miguel and built a Mission here in 1779. After the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Mexico ceded much of its west side including Montrose to United States control as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On January 14th, 1868, Ulysses S. Grant granted land east of Montrose to John Cady Stanton for his campaign against Santa Fe Trail fame Senator David Wickersham’s unsuccessful bid for renomination as Governor of New Mexico in 1864. In 1876 Montrose became one of six towns in Garfield County when that county was organized from parts of Apache and Pima counties following the Gold Rush era railway boom thereabouts. The post office at Montrose opened on November 3rd, 1862 under name Oficina del Oro (Gold Office).
