Montrose is a small town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, located on the eastern edge of Colorado. The population was 7,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose began as a small settlement called "Montrae" on July 6, 1871 when twenty men and women set out from Pueblo to hike and prospect for gold in what is now Weld County. The first post office was established in Montrose on October 2, 1872. In 1902,montrose incorporated as a town with a population of around 100 people. On December 1, 1907 it became an unincorporated community known simply as "Montrose." The downtown area of Montrose contains many original businesses dating back to its early days including the Montrose Hotel (established in 1892), Post Office (established in 1902), Masonic Temple (founded in 1870), and courthouse (established in 1906). A number of other notable landmarks have been added over time such as the First United Methodist Church which was built in 1909, and Unitarian Universalist Church which was built in 1941. The current mayor is Rick Osterholm who has held the position since November 2013. The townspeople are served by municipal court and by two school districts; one serving students K-12th grade through adults while another provides education for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students. Nearby attractions include several breweries including Aspen Peak Brewery and Social Hog Brewing Company, hiking trails that lead up to Mount Evans National Monument & Grand Lake Ranger Station as well as access to nearby ski resorts like Aspen Mountain Resort & Keystone ski resort among others

In 1907, the name of the town was changed from Craig to Montrose to honor James Montrose's grandson, Major General George Armstrong Custer who died during World War II. The First United States Congress meeting occurred here on February 5th, 1861 with 11 representatives from 6 states before adjournment because of a lack of quorum. In 1865, an assay office and coal mine were established at Montrose by JB Lyon & Company which produced over $2 million worth of coal during its lifetime. Coal production stopped after 1906 because of increasing competition from other mines and mills along the railroad corridor west of Denver. Montrose has been home to a number of businesses including The Grapeseed Growers Cooperative since 1916 which produces grapes for wine production; Arroyo Grande Mills starting as a small mill in 1902 and becoming one of the largest paper mills in North America; Foothills Savings Bank started operations here in 1911; and finally, Western Electric Corporation built their headquarters here from 1929 until their sale to GE in 1985. In 1957, both Foothills Savings Bank and Western Electric Corporation merged into one company called Community Federal Savings & Loan Association adding 1,500 employees to its payrolls – making it one of Colorado’s most active banking organizations today! Today’s economy is based on agriculture with many businesses involved with growing crops such as irrigating land for livestock or producing ethanol for gasoline purposes; manufacturing goods such as air conditioning units or tractors; providing services like lawn care or dog walking; or simply enjoying local attractions like hiking or skiing!
