He named his land Montrose after his family's home county in Scotland. The town began to form from parcels of land that were acquired by settlers between 1880 and 1890. The most important early developer was John Bigham, who founded a general store and post office in 1892 and developed a coal mine on his property which produced coal for the electrical grid until it closed in 1978. Together with other early developers, such as Harry Jowers and Charles Aiken, Bigham helped make Montrose one of the most desirable towns in Park County. Montrose became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1907; it had been created as two separate towns – Northmont (later renamed Parks) to the north and Southmont (later renamed Montrose) to the south – because they were adjacent to each other on opposite sides of Boulder Creek. In 1912, two years before annexation by Park County, Northmont established its own school district while Southmont merged with Parks district to form one large school system covering all of Park County east of I-25 including much of Aspen proper as well as parts of Telluride and San Miguel counties west of Interstate 25. In 1915 when park commissioners decided that all public housing should be built within city limits rather than within individual districts like previous generations had done because there was too much competition for scarce development resources among establishing cities like Denver and Aurora, residents living within city limits voted overwhelmingly for incorporation into a new City Council seat instead which would have allowed them more say over their community's future than ever before - something which they continue to hold dear today!
