Northglenn, Colorado is a small town in Larimer County, Colorado, located about 25 miles south of Denver. The population was 773 at the 2000 census. Northglenn was named for Captain Elijah North (1793-1866), an American Revolutionary War veteran and settler in this area who founded the town in 1867. The first permanent settler in what is now Northglenn was James P. Hutton, who arrived in 1868. Hutton's ranch included land that now makes up the eastern edge of Northglenn downtown. In 1870, Hiram Sibley established himself in what is now the northwestern corner of town; he built a log cabin on his property and named it "Hiram's House." In 1871, John Wesley Powell discovered gold at the crossing of River South and Purgatory Creek near what is today Northglenn. This discovery initiated a period of intense exploration and development for northcentral Colorado that continues to this day. By 1875, over 150 men were working at various mines and camps near where Northglenn stands today; many of these men had migrated from Nebraska or Kansas to join the rush to find gold as part of the so-called Gold Rush era. On January 1, 1886, Ladds Peak lookoutObservatoryand Store became operational as one of several new focal points on Rocky Mountain National Park's then unnamed east side when its section was opened by President Grover Cleveland pursuant to Act 624 of 1886 (). The observatory functions continued until 1906 when their site became available for purchase by Park Headquarters which developed it into Rocky Mountain National Park's present visitor center/oceanographic observatory complex (). The community rapidly grew around its new civic institutions; between 1889 and 1893 business grew from $2 per capita to $25 per capita within two years!
