Northglenn is located on the north side of the Rio Grande River and is bordered to the west by Pueblo and to the east by Aspinwall. The first Europeans to visit what is now Northglenn were French traders in 1768. A post office was established here in 1887, and a school was built in 1898. By 1904, the population had grown to 2,500 people. That year, Northglenn became an incorporated city. In 1907, a hydroelectric plant was constructed near Northglenn for use by Northern Electric Company of Denver. The plant operated until it closed down in 1951 due to high costs and technological advancements that made hydraulic fracturing more efficient than past methods for extracting oil from shale deposits It has been said that if Northglenn had not gone ahead with its fracking program as early as he did it is likely that today’s natural gas production would have been difficult or impossible to achieve without fracking because of tight shale formations found only a few miles offshore from where this area sits
