Northglenn is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 21,548 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora metropolitan area. Northglenn is the most populous city in Weld County and one of the largest cities in Colorado. The first people to live in what is now Northglenn were Indian traders and their families who came from Kansas City, Missouri. The townsite was founded by Eliard Otero on July 24, 1868. The first post office was established on October 3, 1870. In 1872, John Wesley Powell discovered Gold Rush mineral rights near present-day Northglenn and began prospecting for gold here himself. In 1880s a railroad was built through Weld County from Denver to Greeley; this led to increased trade and development around Northglenn – including an early oil refinery at Otter Tail Lode (now known as Pawnee Hills). On December 17, 1886, US President Grover Cleveland signed into law a bill creating Weld County; within its boundaries were included parts of today’s Northglenn and Boulder counties as well as present-day South Park and Aspen counties. This created a town site that included much of north central Weld County with what are now the towns of Aspen Creek Village (northwest of downtown), Auraria (southwest of downtown), Greenwood Village (southwest of downtown), Durango (to the east of Greenwood Village), La Junta (to the southeast of Greenwood Village) and Thornton ( northeast of Thornton). Today these neighborhoods still maintain some degree or connection with their original settlements while developing new subdivisions outside their original boundaries
