Northglenn, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 8,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the county seat of Arapahoe County. Northglenn is known for its gold mining and silver mining past, as well as its very strict rules on smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. The first humans to live in what is now Northglenn were Native American people who hunted and gathered game in the area around today's city limits. In 1859, prospectors discovered gold near what is now Northglenn while exploring for new land east of Denver. As early as 1870, North glen had banned smoking within its walls because it believed that this practice caused tuberculosis among miners working in close quarters. This policy was later softened to allow smoking outside only if there was an indoor smoke-free atmosphere available inside the town hall or if smokers were using public areas like libraries or post office lobbies where no Smoking ordinances applied. Today's economy depends heavily on coalmining and other resource extraction industries which have left Northglen with some of the strictest environmental policies in America. Northglenn, Colorado is a small town in southern Colorado located about an hour east of Denver. Northglenn was founded by farmers in 1876 as a result of the Larimer County Land Grant Act. The first post office in Northglenn was established in 1878, and the first store opened its doors in 1880. By 1907, there were twelve businesses in Northglenn with a total population of seventy-six people. In 1912, the Community School District No. 1 was organized and began providing education to citizens of Northglenn. In 1916, construction began on what would become the current courthouse which opened its doors that year. The town's growth continued through World War II when it became a housing center for soldiers returning from war. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, NorthGlenn experienced some serious economic challenges due to the effects of racial integration within Colorado society. This led to a number of African American residents moving into north Glendale from South Side Chicago during this time period; however, local boosters successfully keptnorth Glendale racially segregated until after recent desegregation efforts took place throughout Colorado in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
