Northglenn is a small town in the San Miguel County area of Colorado. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. Northglenn is located on Highway 16 and Range Road 4, about 20 miles (31 km) north of Durango. The first European to visit Northglenn was Juan Rodriguez de la Hoz in 1770. In 1859, the Pikes Peak company founded a post office here and built a store and school on Main Street. A fire destroyed the store on December 7, 1959; however, the post office continued to operate until it closed on January 3, 1960. The first person to be born in Northglenn was John Fenton in 1911. He worked as an editor for The Daily News in Durango until his retirement in 1981. Fenton's wife Nancie died two years later; he then lived alone until his death at 91 years old on July 15, 2006. In 1984, construction began on what would become known as "the mall." The mall opened its doors to the public on November 8, 1984 and became one of the most successful shopping experiences ever offered in central Colorado. It included over 50 stores including JCPenney and Sears Roebuck/Elliott & Sons department stores as well as Nordstrom Rack and Macy's Department Store which anchored both floors of the mall's original four-story structure Today Northglenn retains much of itsoriginal Mall atmosphere with numerous restaurantsand other specialty shops that anchor nearly every floor of this complex that has been completely renovated since it reopened more than 25 years ago!
