The Parker Army Ammunition Plant was a large, military-industrial complex located in the town of Parker, Colorado. The plant manufactured ammunition for the United States Army and other defense organizations from 1887 until it closed in 1971. It is now a museum open to the public. Parker was founded in 1887 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother entrepreneurs James F. Rockefeller and Charles W. Peabody. The company that would become Parker Armory produced arms and munitions for the US military until 1971, when it closed its doors after years of production problems and budget cuts within the Pentagon's Thunderbird program. Today, much of what was once at the Arsenaltown complex has been preserved as part of Parkers Museum of Art & History; however, portions of both buildings remain largely unused and are currently on display only during certain months of the year (e.g., July through September). Many key figures associated with early American industry were born or grew up in or around Parkersvilley; such luminaries as Hughes Aircraft founder Orville Wright and General Electric Co.'s CEO Samuel Morse are all honored here along with many lesser-known members of history who made an impact on Greater Denver's landscape or economy over time: Jens Peter Johansen (1907-1988), head engineer at Rocky Mountain Arsenal; Harry “Doc” Adams (1886-1964), cofounder of Duracell battery manufacturer Western Electric Corporation; Edwin Hemenway (1900-1978), owner and managing editor ofDenver Post newsroom.; Arthur Atherton (1889-1969), president & CEOofColorado Fueled Industries ; Irving "Bud" Selbin (1903 -1992), baseball player for Denver Rockies from 1951 to 1957

In 1892, Parker was founded by John C. Fremont and named after him in commemoration of his donation of land to the town. The community developed around the ranching industry, with farmers and ranchers setting up homes on large hills near the creek that separates central Park from eastern Park County. The first post office was established in 1903, and Parker grew rapidly thanks to its location close to the railroad and water supplies. By 1925, there were over 100 businesses in the town, including a flour mill, grocery store, theater and bank. The population peaked at 1,500 in 1960 but declined as production outside of the ranching industry faded. Parker is now a small agricultural community with a few hundred residents.
The first people to live in Parker were the Hidatsa. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers who discovered what is now Parker in 1770. The first hotel in town was built by Colonel John A. Logan in 1876 and it still stands today. In 1907, Parker became part of the United States after it was acquired by Denver County.
