In 1898, when gold was discovered in Rocky Mountain Park, Fort Lyon was reactivated and became an important base of operations for miners and their horses working in the area. In 1912, Fort Lyon came under command of the 8th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas City, Missouri. The division later moved to Camp Bowie near San Antonio, Texas and in 1916 it was reassigned to Camp Fremont on Angel Island in Puget Sound, Washington. As part of World War I efforts to secure food supplies for soldiers overseas, the 8th Infantry Division stockpiled food at Camp Fremont until 1919 when they departed for Europe. In 1924-1925 Ft Lyon served as headquarters for Marines stationed aboard USS Helena (CL-13) off coast of California while she underwent repairs after hitting a reef while underway off Catalina Island. On 1 October 1959 Ft Lyon was redesignated Parker Army Airfield #1A after being acquisition by the United States Air Force from Japan following its surrender in World War II as part of Project Paperclip which saw American airmen recruited into Japanese army forces

Parker has been inhabited by Native Americans since the late 18th century. In 1862, gold was discovered in Parker and soon after, businesses and people started to flood into the town. By 1870, it had reached its peak with over 10 businesses and 100 residents. However, within a few years of that time, the Panic of 1893 hit Parker hard and many business owners went bankrupt or closed their doors altogether. The Gold Rush ended in 1894 and by 1896 only 321 people were living in Parker compared to 4,681 when it peaked eight years earlier. Some new settlers arrived during this time as well but very few managed to stay long-term due to difficult living conditions and lack of resources available nearby.
