Parker, Colorado is a small town located in Arapaho County, Colorado. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Parker was first settled by Mormons in 1876 and named for Brigham Young's wife Promontory Point on the western edge of what is now Park City. Until the early 1800s, Parker consisted of only a few scattered dwellings and an Indian trading post. By 1860, however, settlers had arrived from Nebraska and Kansas to begin ranching and farming in this region. In 1868, John Smedley founded what became Aurora Oil Company with fellow Mormon businessmen Wm. Mather and David Hale Condon in hopes of developing this new oilfield. Over time, Aurora rapidly became one of the most important towns in southeastern Arapaho County due to its location near natural gas resources and its various businesses which generated additional revenue: Aurora Grain Elevator (1897), Armour & Coats Clothing Factory (1910), Midland Airlines (1925), First National Bank (1930). In 1912, when Arapaho County consolidated with Averill County, Parker became part of that new county. However, it continued to maintain its separate identity until 1924 when it also merged into Auraria Township form
Parker was founded in 1867 by James H. Parker and his wife, Sarah Jane. The town developed around the Parker Arsenal, a munitions plant that functioned from 1868 to 1916. The arsenal produced artillery, machine guns, rifles, and other weapons for the Union army during the American Civil War. It also produced ammunition for the Colorado Gold Rush of 1849-1852. The town was renamed Parker in 1903 after James H. Parker's grandson, John Dickson Parker Jr., who served as Mayor from 1925 to 1933 and 1934 to 1937.
