Parker is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The Parker School District serves the town. The first people to live in what is now Parker were Native Americans who hunted and collected game near the present-day village of Parkersburg. A log cabin was built by George Wickersham in 1859, and about two miles east of Parker a small stream called Little Park went by name from pioneer settler John Burtis's hunting ground on its banks. In 1869 Elisha Pearce homesteaded 350 acres (160 ha) just west of Parkersburg on the south side of Beaver Creek. At that time there were no public roads or trails in this area, so most residents walked their horses and mules to get to their farms and businesses. In 1870 David Ritchie established a trading post at what is now Geary Boulevard between Pikes Peak Road and Beaver Creek Ranch; he named it after his late father General David Ritchie (1799-1875). In 1881 Major James Hurlbut opened an office west of Parkersburg at what is now Keystone Lake reservoir for selling goods brought overland by pack horses from Denver until railroads reached nigh Drive By Pass near Batavia Junction in 1865 (). In 1903 A&P grocery store opened across from First National Bank on Main Street; it became known as "The Market." In 1907 Waugaman's Drug Store followed suit; it became known as "The Pharmacy." Parker has always been an important center for ranching operations because many cattle drives passed through here during the early years of North America’s ranches industry. Cattle drives started out as wayfinding exercises used by herdsmen to find water holes or other sources of sustenance while traveling long distances over difficult terrain.
