As part of his unit, Custer acquired several white artifacts which he placed within Ft Hays walls to symbolize cavalry strength against Native Americans (today’s Battle Monuments Museum contains two such monuments). Following Custer’s death at Little Bighorn on April 6th, 1876 – just three months after arriving at Ft Hays – many soldiers who had fought alongside him returned home with memories of heroism etched into their minds forevermore . One such soldier was Private First Class Augustus Beecher , who had been assigned to escort Captain Nathaniel Lyon “Buffalo Bill” Cody on his final ride through Indian Territory before returning eastward.. In 1886 an act was passed that allowed for whites only ownership of land within city limits and required Indians to lease their land back at $10 per year or face eviction. This caused a great deal of resentment among the Indian population who felt they had been taken advantage of by white men. The railroad arrived in 1880 which accelerated development around town while also giving people more opportunities to earn money outside of Farmingdale and Pawnee City which served as its main hubs until after World War II when those hubs became satellite towns around railroad yards across the stateline
