He brought some back to Italy and began selling them under the name “Pepino” (nicknamed after Michelangelo’s own painting of a man drinking coffee). Pueblo, Colorado was founded by the Pueblo Indians in the mid-19th century. The town of Pueblo was first settled in 1868, and it became a municipality in 1912. Today, the city is home to an estimated 100,000 people and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colorado. The history of Pueblo goes back to at least 1240 AD when traders from Mexico passed through the area and discovered deposits of obsidian (a type of volcanic glass) and other minerals. Over time, various groups migrated to this region and built cultures that developed different strategies for managing their land and resources. In 1863, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered American Colonel John Custer to cross the Rio Grande into Mexico during the Mexican-American War so that he could liberate his garrison at Chihuahua City from supervision by Emperor Maximilian II. After losing battle against Ulysses S Grant’s forces at Buena Vista Canyon near Tucson on November 15, 1864 (the Battle of Palo Alto), Santa Anna ordered his army across the river into New Mexico Territory – which included what is now Boulder County – under cover of darkness on December 8th. A detachment under Captain Samuel Morse attacked two American camps situated about 4 miles upriver from where today’s Roswell Park Boulevard meets Interstate 25; however, they were repulsed with heavy losses for which Morse received death threats from influential Americans such as Mark Twain who thought him dishonorable for not being more successful against superior numbers
Pueblo was founded by the Kit Carson Expedition in 1847. In 1868, Pueblo became the capital of Colorado. The city's first newspaper, The Colorado Republican, was published from 1871 to 1892.
