In the early 1800s, Pueblo was a thriving trading town and its citizens were responsible for many of the most important events in Colorado. One of those events was the creation of the national guard in 1814. The first national guard unit was organized on April 14, 1814, when troops from New Mexico were called to help defend Pueblo against Mexican forces. The soldiers served for only a few months before being disbanded. But the idea of a standing army wasn't new to Colorado. In fact, it had been talked about for years before anything actually happened. In 1776, during the American Revolution, General John Callender proposed creating an international force of citizen soldiers to fight alongside the British army. However, no one wanted to become involved because they didn't think it would be effective or efficient. Eventually, people in Pueblo came up with a different idea: create a volunteer militia that could be used for defense purposes if needed ever again outside of Colorado Springs or Denver (the two main cities). This plan eventually became reality and 1st Battalion Kansas National Guard was created on November 15th,. The first battalion consisted of 36 men and they served until February 4th, 1815 when they were ordered back home by Governor Manuel Gomez due to lack of manpower at that time in Pueblo. But even though their stay was short-lived, their ideas stillstick around and are still present today as part of the local military units in Pueblo County!

The Colorado National Guard was founded on November 12, 1861, in Pueblo, Colorado. The first unit to be organized was the 69th Infantry Regiment. From 1861-1865, the Colorado National Guard served in various conflicts including the American Civil War and the Mexican-American War. In 1867, the regiment was redesignated as the 82nd Infantry Regiment and fought in a number of campaigns during Reconstruction in America.
