Pershing was commissioned as commander of First Air Service Delivery Unit (1/1) at Langley Field in Virginia Beach, Virginia and began providing aerial transportation for troops in World War I on behalf of President Wilson’s America First policy. The first airplane served with distinction during World War I under Colonel Pershing's command including carrying General George Custer to his battlefront near Belleau Wood on October 14th 1916; transporting supplies over enemy lines during Battle Of Argonne November 3rd 1917; evacuating wounded from France on D-Day June 6th 1944; bombing Berlin May 1945 and Okinawa December 7th 1945 - all before airplanes had ever been invented!
