The Coast Guard gift history in Sterling, Colorado goes back to 1914. In that year, the first Coast Guard station was established in Sterling by Captain James W. Cook and his command. The mission of the station was to provide protection on the Western Colorado coast. In 1917, Captain Harry L. McNaught took over as captain of Station #2 in Sterling and began operations with a much more serious mission: to prevent smuggling and piracy along the Northwestern Colorado coast. Station #2 was eventually renamed Station #3 in 1948 after its ownership changed hands once again. With the establishment of Station #4 in 1969, the Coast Guard begun providing assistance to law enforcement agencies throughout Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming during National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Seasonal Investigations missions offshore. This coastal assistance included light search and rescue, prevention of shipwrecks, anti-drug patrols, humanitarian aid assignments, and crowd control measures at beaches during summer tourist season. Currently located at Station #6 overlooking North Mesa Beach near Sterling Boulevard, NOAA’s Office of Coastal Protection & Management (OCP&M) has played an important role in keeping our communities safe from waves crashing onto shoreline homes or businesses; managing key oceanographic resources; monitoring catastrophic events including hurricanes Katrina/ Rita; conducting research on climate change effects on coasts across America; accommodating increasing numbers of visitors who come ashore for fungal Identification inspections conducted by University of California Department of Botany researchers…..

In order to commemorate this history, we are celebrating the centennial of Coast Guard gift history. In 1916, the Coast Guard's predecessor organization, the United States Revenue Cutter Service (USRC), began purchasing gifts from individuals and businesses in order to thank them for their support of its missions. One of the earliest Coast Guard gift recipients was Captain George Wickersham who donated a lifeboat called "Thetis" in 1922. Captain Wickersham was an admirer of sailing ships and wanted to show his support for maritime safety by donating one of his vessels. During World War II, Captain Wickersham donated three lifeboats - one called "Olympic", one called "Hercules" and one called "Penguin". These boats were used during Operation Neptune's Spear which was conducted off the coast of Gibraltar in 1942 as part of World War II's war effort against Nazi Germany. Today, there are many different ways that Coast Guardsmen can show their appreciation for their service by gifting something special like a hat or shirt.
