Sterling, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The population was only 1,715 at the 2000 census, but has since grown to over 4,000. Sterling is named after General James A. Sterling who lead troops during the Mexican-American War and was also an important figure in early Denver development. The town was founded on November 5, 1878 by businessman and civic leader John D. Rockefeller Sr. When it incorporation occurred, there were just a handful of residents living in what is now the downtown area. Today the downtown district contains more than 50 businesses including banks, restaurants and stores as well as luxury apartments and condos. The economy in Sterling is based primarily on agriculture which includes cattle and sheep production as well as tourist trade with activities such as skiing and snowboarding in winter or fishing during summertime. The local water supply comes from two springs that provide potable water for townships within miles of Sterling while other supplies come from glaciers that flow down to the Peduto River near Aspen. The history of Sterling began with hard work by its founders to build a community that would be successful both economically and socially. In addition to Rockefeller's efforts, other pioneers such as Wm Hinton opened up businesses in the early years of Sterling's growth including a hotel/motel complex known today as Holiday Inn Express & Suites (now Marriott). The first post office was established in 1876. In 1907, Sterling became a town. The population of Sterling grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s as mining operations ceased and new housing developments were built. The population peaked at around 25,000 in the 1940s but declined thereafter. Today, the population is only slightly over 10,000 people. Sterling has experienced significant growth since it became a town—particularly during the past few decades—due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas such as Denver and Kansas City. Additionally, its strong economic development has given it a growing reputation as an attractive community for both retirees and young adults alike.
