It was located on West Second Street and it operated for a few years. At that time, the guns were all pistols and shotguns. In 1899, the first rifle shop opened in Sterling. This shop was called "The Gunsmith Shop." The rifles were all shotguns at that time. But by 1910, the gun stores had merged into one company named "Denver Arms & Ammunition Company." This company bought out all of the other businesses in Sterling within a few years. By 1925, there were six different gun stores in Sterling. They were all run by different people who owned their own shops. The most famous of these stores was "The Gunfighter's Store." This store sold rifles, shotguns, handguns and armor piercing ammunition at that time. It also served as the local headquarters for the National Rifle Association (NRA). But by 1930, things had started to change in Sterling. There was a mass shooting taking place every day now that World War II was starting up! And so, various companies decided to move away from selling firearms altogether and focus instead on supplying supplies for military purposes! In 1931, Denver Arms & Ammunition Company went bankrupt because they couldn't keep up with demand for war materiel! And so, throughout 1932-1933 there wasn't really any gun sales happening anywhere in Sterling other than through mail order! But then something amazing happened! A new company called Brownells came online and began selling firearms directly to consumers! They offered reasonable shipping on orders over $100!! So suddenly there was an influx of new customers coming into town! And this allowed everything else at The Gunfighter's Store to slowly die off too... until it finally closed its doors completely in 1984!!!
