Sterling was founded in 1876 and named for General James Fenton Sterling.The post office within the town was established on July 10, 1879. The first store in the town opened on November 3rd of that year. In 1903, Sterling had its first schoolhouse and by 1907 it had two churches as well as a Masonic Lodge. In 1912 the townsite was enlarged with land from White Sands National Monument to form what is now known as Sterling Heights. In 1916 a hydroelectric power plant began operations in nearby White Sands and by 1928 the city of Sterling had been born with over 100 residents. In 1952 Utah Compact No 9 transferred all of Weld County to Colorado (itself being re-incorporated into Sterling on February 6th). In 1957 construction began on Interstate 25 near present day City Park and as part of this project an expressway called I-25N was built concurrent with US 36 which runs concurrently through both townships forming I-25W concurrent with US 40/I-70/US 287/SR 601 etc.. This road eventually became I-70 when it was extended southward from Loveland to Greeley in 1978 Since then sterling has seen steady growth with strong job opportunities due to the booming economy throughout much of recent years including several expansions of their shopping mall which currently employs over 700 people across twelve floors including four large department stores along with more than 200 smaller businesses totaling nearly 12 million square feet²²
