Sterling is a town in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,619 at the 2010 census. Sterling is part of the Fort Collins-Loveland, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sterling is located on the edge of Mesa County and inside the San Juan Mountains National Monument. The first settler in Sterling was George Shea who ranched and built a cabin in 1868. The post office was founded in 1875, and named after General James B. Sterling (1815–77), one of Colorado's heroes during the Mexican-American War. In 1902, oil shale deposits were discovered near Sterling andboomed local business; by 1912, production totaled 2 million barrels per day (bpd). By 1922 Brent oil had been developed nearby; by 1925 all remaining oil production had stopped as a result of overproduction caused by low natural gas prices. After years of decline due to low gas prices and increased development outside of town, new businesses began to reopen around 2005 when Interstate 25 was widened from 4 to 6 lanes with new construction including an interchange with I-25 Business Loop east of town center that improved access for businesses in neighboring towns such as Loveland and Lakewood In order for businesses to survive during high gas prices it became necessary for them to invest in energy efficient equipment like air conditioning units or LED lights which made their products more marketable across different types of stores such as big box store or small convenience store so that they could stay afloat through tough economic times
