However, during the Great Depression, Sterling experienced significant economic decline; its only employment during that time was serving as an official polling place for the November 3rd election. Though many people today believe that this event actually took place on January 6th or 7th due to confusion caused by simultaneous celebrations taking place throughout southern Colorado at that time (the date given is incorrectly recorded on most original deeds), it is generally accepted that day as being key to sterling’s founding identity and future growth – indeed “Sterling” would not exist were it not for General John A. Logan’s victorious attempt to drive out Mexico from Southwestern Colorado two months prior… early settlers arriving into what would become known as courtlande [sic] Valley came primarily from eastern England because there were no open trade routes between those countries at that time... so with few other options available they chose to settle down near water where accessible goods could be purchased easier.. With access to irrigation systems and rich soil south of Durango thanks largely to previous campaigns conducted by David Hockley (one of river piloting pioneer Kit Carson) & his men starting about 1859,... some farmers decided early on just proximity rather than agriculture as their primary focus & started raising sheep/goats etc., leaving hand me downs behind which continue today (& are occasionally auctioned off!)
