The National Guard of Sterling, Colorado was established on November 1, 1912. The purpose of the National Guard was to provide resources and support to local governments in order to ensure their defense and independence from any external force. From its inception, the National Guard has been a valuable resource for Sterling County. From its early days, the National Guard played a significant role in the development of Sterling County. In 1912, militia units were organized in response to a civil disturbance that had occurred in nearby Denver. The Denver Sheriff's Department refused to disperse demonstrators and called for help from the Colorado National Guard. This event is consideredto be one of the first uses of national guard troops within our county boundaries. The Garrison Battalion served as an infantry regiment throughout World War I and World War II; however, they are generally remembered more for their roles during both world wars than any other time period. Beginning in 1944-1945, they served as part of Operation Market Garden which aimedTo break through German lines near Arnhem Netherlands during World War II. Since then, Sterling County’s relationship with the National Guard has continued to grow stronger every year; this can be seen most clearly through events like Military Appreciation Day or Memorial Day where citizens come out into town together to celebrate military service by eating flags and joining hands while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”

Sterling, Colorado is a small town located in western Colorado. The population was 3,711 as of the 2010 census. Sterling has a rich history dating back to 1868 when it was founded as a small ranch community by settlers from Iowa. The community grew rapidly after silver was discovered in nearby Arapaho and Gunnison counties in 1879. By the early 1920s, Sterling had become one of the most important mining towns in western Colorado. The town prospered until the arrival of oil exploration companies in the 1930s and 1940s caused a decline in business and population. In recent years, however, Sterling has experienced an upturn with growth in the local economy and new development including an Eden SoccerPlex which opened in 2014. Sterling is located at (36.560971,-111.547959). It occupies a narrow strip of land between Arapaho Creek on its east side and Gunnison County to its west (the other two sides are part of Cheyenne County). According to the 2010 Census, Sterling has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²). Of this area, 1 square mile (0.6 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) constitutes water.[1] Climate [ edit ] The climate here Typically experiences mild winters with occasional cold snaps but generally mild summers; thunderstorms are not common during summer months although they can happen occasionally due to lightning activity or tornadoes that hit close by.[2][3] Thunderstorms may also occur occasionally during periods where there is high humidity like late fall through early winter,[4] while average temperatures range from highs around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (−12 degrees Celsius) year-round[2][3]

Sterling is a census-designated place in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 931 at the 2010 census. Sterling was founded in 1868 by Englishman John Sterling and his wife Mary Ann. It originally consisted of only two properties, one on the south side of the Animas River and another on the east side. In 1872, Sterling's first post office opened and served for six years. The town's growth stemmed from its location as an access point to nearby mining claims and railroad lines. By 1890, it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1902, the Sterling Coal Company was formed and began developing land near the town center. This led to increased development around town and within minutes of each other; this made shopping in town much easier than necessary or desirable outside of town limits. In 1937, Sterling became part of what is now Mesa County when Douglas County was divided into two parts along racial lines following passage of the National Housing Act Amendments of 1937. As a result, most white residents left for Mesa County while black residents continued to live in Sterling until after its incorporation into Mesa County as well as continuing to use it as their mailing address until its annexation into Douglas County in 1990
The first person to settle in Sterling was David M. Sterling, who purchased the land from the Ute Indians in 1867. In 1870, he and his wife, Martha Jane Headrick, established a post office and built a log cabin on their new land. The family continued to grow the farm until 1917 when they sold it to C.H. White for $10,000. The White family operated the farm for many years until it was acquired by the Denver Post Company in 1951.
