Sterling is a town in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains and straddles the route of the old Kit Carson Trail. It was named after Sterling Silver Company founder James A. Sterling and his family's estate in Leavenworth, Kansas. The first settler in what is now Sterling was George Armstrong who homesteaded in 1875. The first post office was established at Sterling in 1879. There were only 10 residents when it opened! In 1905, John Dallimore built a sawmill and millrace as part of his Rancho San Vicente property which he used for ranching and sheep farming until 1935 when he sold it to the Chaffee County Land Office for $1 million dollars! Today you can still see some of this architecture including Ponderosa Pine Timber Building on Main Street which dates back to 1907! In 1916-1917 there was an abortive attempt by America First Party candidate Frank Hildebrandt to get recognition from the US government for what he considered to be "the rebirth of civilization" following World War I through land purchases that would have included parts of present day Sterling! He also unsuccessfully ran as a Republican candidate against incumbent Chaffee County Sheriff Tom Bowers in that year's general election! In 1924 Jens Lueders (1893-1965) became one of only two men ever elected sheriff of Chaffee County – later becoming Range Deputy Marshal for Arizona before retiring from politics altogether due to health reasons in 1987… It wasn't until 1951 that local selectman Harry Noyes Sr., himself a Creeper Valley resident since 1922 when he served as president pro tem (vice chairman)of Citizens' Council #2 which advocated for improvements within town limits, introduced legislation that gave town status with all its rights including representation on local boards and powers over nuisances like noise & parking lots etc!!! That same year mayor Clyde Dickey appointed seven citizens to a three-member board called "The Town Board" charged with carrying out all village functions such as zoning regulations; maintaining public playgrounds; financing school construction; establishing police department services; trash collection; fire prevention/ Prevention Act hearings & other important matters affecting village life!!! The first meeting took place on April 17th 1951 with Mayor Dickey presiding over proceedings!!!! And so began…..the longest continuous run any municipality has had without incorporated status anywhere IN THE WORLD!!!!! One could go on forever but really this story covers quite enough ground…………………. ultimately incorporation occurred on January 1st 1960 thru passage by vote of Town Meeting resolution (7-0)!!!
