When Sterling, Colorado was founded in 1876, it had a population of just over 100 people. The town was built on the edge of a large coal mine and soon became known for its policing services. Today, Sterling is a thriving community with a population of over 1,500 residents and an active police department that patrols the area around town. Police officers have been part of the community since Sterling was founded. In 1976, the city council passed an ordinance authorizing the formation of a Police Department. The first officer to be sworn in was Deputy Chief Chuck Sprague. Since then, many officers have served in sterling including Sgt. Rick Purdy who retired in 2009 after 33 years with the department; Lt. John McCarthy who has served since 2002 and is now retiring; Sgt Tom Kappas who has been with the department since 2006; Officer Pat Coffey who has been with the force for 7 years and is currently serving as acting sergeant while he completes his training; Officers Shannon O’Neill and Christopher Hiltzik both graduated from law enforcement academy in 2014 and are currently working their way up through the ranks;Officer Tony Whitehead who joined forces with Sterling PD in May 2016 after 10 years spent working as an officer for Wheat Ridge County Sheriff’s Office;Officer Kyle Steeves who joined forces with Sterling PD on January 1st, 2018 after serving two years as an officer for Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Today, there are nine sworn officers full-time assigned to sterling policing service: four detectives (one rotating every other month), two sergeants (one rotating every other month), one corporal ( rotates every six months), one trooper ( rotates every three months), one support sergeant ( rotates every six months) and one reserve lieutenant/assistant sergeant( rotates once per year). Additionally, there are several civilians employed by sterlingPD whose sole duty is to provide support to our police officers on call or participate in Community Oriented Policing Services projects throughout Stanton Township or surrounding areas

Sterling is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located in the Sawtooth Mountains of western Douglas County. It is part of the Rocky Mountain West region. The first settler in Sterling was John Sells in 1879. A post office called Sterling was established in 1881, and remain so to this day. In 1923 it became home to "The Dell" movie theater which continues to provide entertainment through today's events such as live music and other performances throughout the year outside its doors In 1968, when Interstate 25 bypassed Douglas County and took directly to Telluride instead (and concurrent with a major growth spurt across central Douglas County), much of what now makes up Sterling had not yet been developed or populated due to lack of interest or investment by either party involved. As a result, many small businesses closed their doors during this time period including one hardware store which still operates within boundaries of present-day Sterling There has been some recent redevelopment taking place around town center with new homes being built on older properties while also creating more space for retail business within walking distance from most residents

It was named after George Sterling, an early settler. The town was founded in 1887 by John Dickson and James McGillivray as a depot for stagecoaches traveling between Denver and Auraria. The name of the town originated with George Sterling, who donated land to the town for its foundation and who also served as its first mayor. In 1951, Sterling began to experience rapid growth due to the construction of Interstate 70 and other development within easy driving distance of the small community. Rapid growth has caused some problems since then; such as increased traffic on major roads near the center of town which can cause gridlock during peak hours or create traffic jams outside of town limits during off-peak hours. In recent years there have been plans made to redevelop portions of downtown into mixed use buildings while preserving much ofexisting historic architecture and infrastructure; including a new elementary school being built adjacent to Interstate 70 and several businesses being relocated from their original locations within downtown towards new neighborhoods east and west of Interstate 70.
