Sterling is a small town located in Routt County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,509 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the banks of the Gardner River, about 15 miles (24 km) north of Fort Collins. The town was founded in 1878 by miners who had come to the area during the Gold Rush. Sterling has a large grocery store and several smaller businesses. It also has a school system and two churches. The first settlers in Sterling were men from Brigham City, Utah, who had come to the area during the Mormon Trail Expedition of 1846-48. In 1886, they built a gristmill that still stands today and continues to be used for grinding corn and other agricultural purposes. In 1924, when Interstate 25 was created between Colorado Springs and Ludlow, Sterling became one of its original routing points. This allowed for easier access to transportation within Colorado and across Kansas Valley counties into Nebraska Territory through nearby Carbondale and Windsor
