By 1920, however, traffic levels had begun to outpace available space so much that the city decided to annex parts of neighbouring towns such as Loveland in order to keep up with growing demand; this annexation ledto what is now known as Loveland's " annexed territory ". Superior, Colorado is a small town located in Gunnison County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Superior is named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn and was killed in that engagement. The first European to see what is now Superior was Juan Rodriguez de la Hoz on July 8, 1607 when he landed on the present day site of Superior and noticed "a very high mountain" from where he could see "a great deal of water". Spanish traders soon arrived here with their precious cargoes of silver and gold. In 1763 José Rivera y Costilla chartered a party to explore this new land which they called El Rio Bravo de las Animas (the Rio Grande of Bones). They found no water but discovered rich coal seams and made an abortive attempt to establish a settlement here. By 1800 eight stores were open in this area with over 50 people living here including 25 Indians. Mining began early on as local coal seam miners dug out some of the earliest significant amounts of coal in our area. In 1886 Northern Pacific Railway built its line between Denver and Cheyenne through Gunnison County; this caused many residents to leave for lack of jobs. In 1901 Arapaho Chief Manuelito Bandeirantes transferred ownership of his reservation east of present day Superior to the Ute Tribe effective January 1, 1901 pursuant to Treaty #6 between Great Britain and various Native American tribes (see Monterrey Agreement). On January 10th 1919 a group led by John Wesley Powell reached 14 miles below present-day Superior along what is now known as the Milk River valley while exploring North America for America’s first transcontinental railroad project; their journey marked one step forward for both America’s exploration efforts and its evolution into an advanced society! It took until 1892 before anyone discovered any natural resources near today’s town limits according to records kept by Gunnison County officials at that time! Today most residents commute into nearby Greeley or Aspen for their jobs which include support services such as law enforcement, education, healthcare, manufacturing etc.. The current shopping center complex opened in 1997 across from downtown Superior serving as home base for all activities related thereto including schools/daycare/library/cafeteria/grocery store/bars etc... Although much has changed since then it still retains many old-time values such as smalltown life combined with modern amenities making it easyto get around without leaving your community... It's not hard to find things happening inside or outside Superior: there are kids playing basketball on Main Street or walking their dogs down High Street; parents taking careof children during school hours or picking up dropped off packages at home; retirees socializing at retirement communities nearby or golfing at local courses close by... everything seems so normal until you take a closer look
