Superior, Colorado is a small town located in the Gunnison County seat of Delta. The population was 2,492 at the 2010 census. Superior has been inhabited for over two centuries and is one of the oldest towns in the United States. The first Europeans to visit Superior were Spanish traders who visited in 1604 as part of their exploration of the Western Hemisphere. During this time, they discovered gold and silver mines in what is now Gunnison County. In 1864, Joshua Hance founded an agricultural society in Superior that became a model for other towns throughout America. In 1870, the Territorial Legislature designated Superior as the county seat for Delta County. This designation made it possible to build new roads and improve infrastructure that would support development within the growing town. In 1912, Superior won passage of a local government ordinance establishing a Town Hall and Board of Education. This ordinance later became law statewide and helped make Superior one of the most developed communities in Colorado Springs area during this time period. The town also played an important role during World War II when it housed military troops stationed in nearby Fort Carson until they were sent home after hostilities ceased. Today, Superior continues to grow with steady growth rates thanks to its strong economy and expanding community services such as health care, education, firefighting and municipal governance which have made it one of Colorado's most livable places to live today.
