The first school opened in 1882 with nine students; it eventually evolved into today's two-school system with grades K-12th grade being housed within primary schools while high school (grades 11 through 12) is housed within secondary schools (one elementary school and one middle/junior high school). In 1877 post office Superintendent George Haggerty established a mail service from Denver through Fort Collins providing mail transportation between those cities until 1899 when private railroads became available By 1886 there were six dwellings in town with only one farmhouse remaining unoccupied In 1898 Haggerty donated portions of his homestead north of US 25 to form what would eventually become East Union Normal School which operated until 1916 During World War II residents raised food for military troops by harvesting cornstalks from their yards On October 1st 1957 a fire burned down Albertson's Supermarket killing four people inside
