When the first coffee plants were planted in Superior, Colorado, in 1912, people knew it was a special place. The region had lots of drainage systems and perfect soil conditions for growing coffee beans. And the climate? Perfect! Soil temperatures range from about 50 degrees to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and there is no lack of rain or snow. Coffee has been grown here since before man even walked on the earth! In 1928, while working as an Agricultural news correspondent for The Denver Post, I traveled to Superior and wrote about my experiences there. In that article I mentioned that one of the first businesses in town was a small grocery called Dutch Bros., which still stands today. I also remember visiting Gannett's paper plant down by the river – it looked like something out of a postcard from century old Europe! Today, Superior is home to some very fine high-quality coffee shops including Two Hands Coffee & Tea at 401 S Broadway (formerly The Dearborn), Blue Bottle Coffee at 5455 E Redwood Rd., K&B Coffee & Donuts at 6200 W California Ave., Rogue Roasters at 601 E 4th St., and more. In 1916, King Coffee Company began serving coffee at what is now the University of Colorado Boulder campus. From there, King CoffeeCompany grew quickly and by 1922 had outlets throughout Colorado and Wyoming. In 1938, Superior Coffee Company was founded by Edwin Forbes as a family-owned business with a goal of providing high-quality coffee to consumers all over the state of Colorado. Superior was founded in 1876 by Elisha Barnes and others as a post office near what is now Denver. Superior is a small town in southern Colorado, located about 20 miles west of the city of Denver. It was founded in 1875 by John and Mary White and their three children, pioneer settlers who had come from Center Valley, PA. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its proximity to the oil fields of northern Colorado and its location on the Arkansas River. In 1907, Superior became one of first municipalities in Colorado to be incorporated as a village. By 1935, it had reached an population size of over 1,000 residents. During World War II, Superior played an important role as a munitions plant supplying the war effort in Colorado and nearby states. After the war ended, Superior experienced significant growth as a result of new businesses that arrived during the postwar period such as grocery stores, banks, engineering companies and real estate development. Today, Superior is a vibrant community with many popular amenities including shopping centers and parks; it also boasts several prestigious institutions such as US Air Force Base CO-BASED which houses one of America's largest airfields; Aspen Highlands School District No. 5A offers high-quality education for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade; and local newspapers are published regularly throughout the year

The town grew rapidly over the next several decades, becoming a center for agriculture, ranching, and mining. In 1912, Superior became the first municipality in Colorado to be established as an Independent School District. The city continued to grow during the 1920s and 1930s, thanks in part to its status as a regional center for travel and commerce. By the end of World War II, Superior had become one of the largest towns in north-central Colorado. After years of growth and change, the city experienced another period of stagnation during the 1960s and 1970s due to low economic opportunities and population loss from rural migration. In recent years, however, Superior has seen significant revitalization through new development along its downtown area and through initiatives such as its successful bid for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
