National Guard gifts have been a part of the Superior community for many years. The National Guard has always been a symbol of strength, patriotism and readiness to help others in times of need. When the Colorado National Guardsmen were first organized in 1907, they were given equipment and supplies from local businesses and individuals. Beginning in 1916, when World War I started, national guard members received training at Camp Arvin on the Uinta Mountains. When World War II began, Boulder County was one of only four counties in Colorado that did not offer military service because it was considered too dangerous. However, Boulder County residents donated numerous items to their local military unit- including barracks and uniforms- until 1944 when all combat troops were withdrawn from Colorado due to overcrowding at Fort Carson in Kansas City. In 1948, State Representative Harry Waring introduced legislation requiring every county in Colorado to arm itself with rifles by September 1st so that the state could “fill up its quotas” for volunteers for the Korean War. After much debate within his own Republican Party, Waring passed House Bill 9019 which became law on October 12th and allowed citizens of each county to provide rifles or shotguns to their local units if they so chose. This act helped increase militia membership statewide as more people realized that being a part of a militia was something they could do if needed. The current system for giving national guard gifts is based on legislation passed by the State Legislature in 1978 known as The Model Patriot Act Amendments (HG 3293). This act amended Section 41-5-119(5) of the Colo Statutes which states that any gift or donation made “in honor or memory” of an individual who has served with distinction while wearing full uniform or carrying an insignia associated therewith may be accepted by any officer commanding such unit as a token of appreciation for services rendered during peace time’s hostilities against foreign nations without further compensation being required from recipient thereof save reimbursement for funeral expenses actually incurred therein unless otherwise provided hereinbefore provided (emphasis added). This act also allows public donations towards officers' uniforms only if those donations are made directly through an officer's personal account rather than through a fund established specifically for this purpose by statute; no contributions may be made indirectly through organizations either formed under this section or acting pursuant thereto (emphasis added). In recognizing how important it is for members of our military to receive appropriate gifts in commemoration thereof, subsection (c) provides specific guidance regarding how donors wishing to make monetary contributions shall go about doing so: In order that all sums contributed be properly acknowledged and taxed according to law,—and nothing herein contained shall prejudice any claim hereafter asserted against this state arising out thereof—the Director General hereby directs any such donor whose contribution reaches five hundred dollars ($500) or more per annum before taxes SHALL BE REWARDED BY THE STATE WITH A SUBSIDY OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100), AND ANY DONATED MONEY OVER ONE HUNDRED FIVE DOLARS ($500) PER ANNUM SHALL BE TREATED AS A NONMILITARY CONTRIBUTIONS UPON ADMISSION TO THE MILITARY SERVICES SYSTEM BY THE DIRECTOR GENERAL (emphasis added). today's system begins with Governors approval followed by delivery via postal mail

The Colorado National Guard was organized on November 16, 1876. The first unit was a company of cavalry called the "Colorado Volunteer Cavalry" and it was raised at Fort Lyon in southeastern Colorado. The units were disbanded in 1879. In 1916, the National Guard was reorganized as an infantry regiment and renamed the "7th Infantry Regiment" on October 1, 1916. The regiment served in World War I before being demobilized in 1919. In 1925, the 7th Infantry Regiment was again re-organized as an artillery battalion and redesignated as the "3rd Battalion (Heavy) of the Colorado National Guard." The battalion served in World War II before being demobilized on September 30, 1945.
Superior, Colorado is a town located in Eagle County, Colorado. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Superior is known for its dramatic scenery and wildflowers. The town was founded in 1881 by members of the Latter Day Saints Church who traveled to the area from Utah to find new land for their church. The first post office was founded in 1882 and the first store opened in 1886. The current courthouse was built in 1907. The 10mile long US-6 highway runs through Superior and connects it with other towns in the county such as Pueblo and Glenwood Springs. A variety of industries are located within Superior including meatpacking, mining, soap manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. Although there is no service industry present within the town limits, visitors can enjoy shopping at local stores or restaurants which offer a wide variety of products from around the world.
The National Guard has a rich history that goes back to the Revolutionary War. The first national guard units were raised in Massachusetts in 1775 as part of the Continental Army. The first national guard regiment was organized in Rhode Island in 1776. The first national guard brigade was organized in New York City in 1777. In 1781, the First United States Congress authorized the raising of a corps of militia for service on condition that they be drilled and equipped “for such uses as may be proper to them at present” (1). In 1861, when America seceded from Great Britain, all states except Georgia raised their own armies with the goal of defending themselves against any possible attack by Confederate forces. However, since most of these militias were not very well-equipped and didn’t have enough manpower to do much more than protect their state capitals, little action was taken until 1864 when General James Halleck ordered General Philip Sheridan to raise a nationwide army under command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant (2). Once Grant had assembled his army, he began planning an invasion of southern Virginia which would begin on April 12th 1865 (3). Unfortunately for Grant, Confederate General Robert Ewell had already evacuated Richmond and moved his headquarters south to Lynchburg where he started planning an even larger counterattack which would eventually lead to Grant’s defeat and ultimate surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 (4). This event is often regarded as one of the turning points in American History and it is also responsible for Key developments such as women being allowed into military combat roles and open homosexuality becoming legal throughout most of America after this event. Nevertheless, given all that has happened within our nation's military since then – from World Wars I & II through Desert Storm – it's clear that there are many things that the National Guard can contribute both now and into the future!
On July 15, 1861, the Confederate States of America was formed and the first unit to join the new country was the 1st South Carolina National Guard.
Superior was a census-designated place in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Superior" was given to the community by surveyors in 1892 because it had the best land and defenses for a post office in that area. The first post office opened in 1907. In 1912, Superior annexed much of neighboring Park City and formed what is now called Park City-Superior annexation. In 1924, Superior began its own school district which became known as Superior School District No. 2 (SSD2). In 1955, SSD2 merged with Park City School District to form Park City-Superior School District No. 3 (PPSD3). In 1968, PPSD3 merged with Rocky Mountain SchoolsDistrict No. 1 to form Rocky Mountain SchoolsDistrict No. 2 (RMSD2). RMSD2 then merged with Jefferson County Schools District #1 to form Jefferson CountySchools District No. 3 (JCSD3) on January 1st ,2000 On December 25th,,2006 Superiors electric Cooperative celebrated its centennial!. The electric cooperative was founded on December 25th 1906 by three men who pooled their money and bought power from local utilities to start an electricity service for themselves and their neighbors
