Superior is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,046 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of the county and is bordered by Aspen to the east and west, Lafayette to the north, and Jefferson County to the south. The community was founded in 1887 as North Superior by J.C. Blankenship and his wife Julia Elizabeth Goudreau. It named after a nearby mountain peak (Superior Peak) because its location offered considerable grazing land for livestock and timber production during that time period. The first post office was established in 1889 with Wm Hahn as its first superintendent. In 1912, a sawmill was built on Elk Creek which soon became an important source of income for the townspeople. A small schoolhouse served settlers until 1918 when a larger one was erected on Main Street near the present day courthouse complex which now houses Superior's library annex/located next door to White Sands Museum of Art & History During World War II, Superior employed more than 100 residents in various industries such as war materials manufacturing; aircraft construction; shipbuilding; fishing; agriculture; and other allied activities throughout central Weld County while still remaining self-sufficient due to its own local resources including water supply, lumbering industry etc.; this unusual situation came to an end following hostilities when government assistance began flowing into neighboring counties at an unprecedented rate resulting in plummeting prices for goods produced here while simultaneously increasing taxes elsewhere [1]. It wasn't until 1978 that what had once been primarily farmland surrounding town Limits became developed into today's downtown area complete with shopping malls - Aspen Mall & Super Walmart - housing numerous restaurants & services like beauty salons, hair stylists etc., concurrent with heavy investment from adjacent municipalities not only improving infrastructure but also initiating development projects such as Aspen Freeway Extension project continuing up towards I-25 just east of town limits encompassing over 780 acres now making it one of most expansive freeways ever constructed serving all aspects Of Central Colorado[2]. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within core boundaries resulting in increased employment rates along side updated architecture styles including Craftsman Bungalow style homes predominant among older residents mixed with contemporary architecture becoming increasingly popular among younger professionals commuting into central Weld County each day[3]; what once been a rural outpost has become something quite different altogether incorporating features unique unto itself characterizing this particular slice of American life called "Suburban America".[4]
