The Superior Naval Militia was formed on December 3, 1892 and the first ship to be commissioned in their fleet was USS Constitution on July 14, 1893. The navy has always been a part of the community in which it resides and 5 Flagship Ships have served as USS Constitution- Cleveland (1895), Baltimore (1901), New Orleans ( 1915), San Francisco ( 1919), and Los Angeles ( 1941). In 1907, Mayor Harry Fenton purchasedUSS Potomac from the Navy for $2,500 and placed it in service as Municipal Ship #1. This boat played an important role during World War I when she transported food and supplies to various fronts. From 1921 until her decommissioning in 1951 she served as Municipal Ship #2 while being used by schoolchildren for games, science experiments and other activities ashore; later she was used as a storage depot for donations from residents of Superior until her restoration in 1978! The next year saw another significant donation by Commodore John Dickey when he offered his ship SS Virginian to serve as a training vessel for local Coast Guard officers cadets. This gave young sailors an opportunity to learn about naval life and its customs before enlisting into our active duty navy! After serving primarily with Local Marine Units through World War II she reverted back to municipal use until being sold again new last year to become property of The Horseshoe Casino Hotel PACIFIC BEACH located just outside of town limits! Superior, Colorado is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. Superior is located in the eastern half of Douglas County and it bordered the county seat of Grand Junction to the south and east. To the north it bordered Mesa County. The first post office for Superior was established in 1865. The town was named for General James A. Superior (1814-1896), who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican War and later served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs under President Ulysses S. Grant's administration. The settlement on Valentine Creek began by fur trappers in 1872 and continued to grow until 1885 when gold was discovered at Anaconda Heights near modern-day Grand Junction. The townsite site became a mining camp with claims dating back to 1875 when an ad appeared in the local paper for a “Gold Mines In These Mountains” In 1888, construction began on what would become known as "The White House" which serve as headquarters for all mining operations at Anaconda Heights from 1888 until 1925 when that part of Anaconda Heights were closed down due to Gold Rush depletion of resources caused by new discoveries elsewhere in the Rocky Mountains A post office called Superior had been established in 1865 but failed to take hold because no people wanted to live near where there were no rich veins of gold or silver found After failing to find anyplace else to establish a post office, General James A. Superior offered his land adjacent to present-day Superior so that someone could build one After some discussion between residents and Postmaster General John C Fremont, construction began on what would become Fremont Post Office on December 12, 1909 with mail service beginningNovember 1st that year . In 1881, the U.S. Government purchased 640 acres of land in Superior, Colorado from the local Pueblo people in order to create a national park. The government named the park after American general and settler General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed during a battle with Indians near what is now Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1847. The first visitors to the area were settlers from Illinois who came to explore potential homesteads and ranching opportunities in the area. In 1902, Superior became part of Aspen Park which also included Crested Butte, Glenwood Springs and White Sands National Monument. The park saw its heyday in the 1920s when it was home to over 20 million visitors annually and was used as a training ground for American soldiers during World War II. However, by 1940 only 8% of the park had been developed while most of it remained undeveloped due to prohibition laws that prevented alcohol sales on Federal lands
In 1876, the first post office in Superior was established. In 1912, the town became a municipality and was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer. The current name of the town is derived from its location on Colorado's 26th parallel north: "Superior" means "north of the 26th." As of the 2010 census, there were 903 residents in Superior.
