The Colorado Air National Guard's 436th Airlift Wing deployed a gift history in Thornton, CO this past Monday. The event honored the United States Air Force's 446th Airlift Squadron, which lost its life in an airplane crash on October 15th, 2017. On October 15th, 2017, the 436th Airlift Wing sent a C-130J Hercules to crash land at Pueblo Chiricahua National Monument after military passengers and cargo were ejected from the plane. All passengers and crew were safely extracted before the aircraft came to a stop several miles from the monument. The 433rd Expeditionary Multipurpose Aviation Regiment was awarded the Tourniquet Flying Award for their actions during that day. The award is given to an organization or unit that displays heroic behavior while performing essential airlift services within theater of operations.
Thornton, Colorado is a town located in the Clear Creek Valley area of north-central Colorado. The community was founded in 1887 by George A. Thornton and his wife, Catharine. It lies on the east bank of Clear Creek, about midway between Westminster and Golden (the county seat), southeast of Aspen and northwest of Aspen Park. The population was 1,611 as of the 2010 census. The first post office was established in Thornton on July 3, 1887. George A. Thornton served as its first president. The name derives from the nearby peak "Butterfly" which can be seen from most parts of the community. Butterflies were once common visitors to Thornton because they attractedsects during these early days when there were few public places for people to gather around such things as wells or riverside picnic sites. Today, Thornton is known for its agriculture products including hay, vegetables, fruits, potatoes and apples; its tourism attractions including four different golf courses; and its historical significance for being one of the original towns in this valley that sprang up around Denver's First National Bank building on Downing Street which opened in 1865 before becoming part of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1868

In 2015, it was announced that the USAF would begin deploying gifts from across its military branches. This move signals an ever-growing sense of cooperation and unity within our Armed Forces. Since 1945, the USAF has sent more than $1 billion in gifts to its brother services. These donations provide support for common goals and promote friendship between our military members. Some of these donations have been incredibly meaningful, such as sending Army troops to Normandy during World War II or providing airmen with equipment during Desert Storm. Other gifts have been less tangible but equally effective in supporting relationships between service members and their families. For example, after 9/11, the USAF sent generators and vehicles to help Staten Island rebuild following Hurricane Sandy. Today, we continue to appreciate all that the USAF has done for us over the years. The community became known for its wide variety of crops and cattle, as well as its large livestock market place. Early residents were farmers and their families who raised corn, beans, wheat and other crops on their land. In the late 1800s, Thornton began to grow into a commercial center with businesses including a grocery store, bank, doctor's office and several hotels. After World War II, Thornton experienced rapid growth as an aviation manufacturing center thanks to its location near Denver airport. However, during the 1990s-2000s there were declines in both economic activity and population due to various factors including tight real estate markets and recessionary trends across much of western Colorado. Today Thornton retains some of its historical characteristics such as a wide variety of crops and cattle but also has significant suburban development along Interstate 25 which provides access to major metropolitan areas in east Texas or Oklahoma City.
