Thornton, Colorado is a town located in Arapaho County, Colorado. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. Thornton is part of the Golden Triangle region and has many cultural ties to the Navajo Nation. The first European settlers in Thornton were farmers who came from Missouri in 1868. The original name of Thornton was “Cottonwood” after cottonwoods that grew near the town site. By 1881, Thornton had become an agricultural center with a post office and three stores. By 1915, Thornton had 30 residents and two churches. The towns growth accelerated during World War I when military officials needed housing for troops stationed in Arapaho County. In 1925, the state legislature passed a bill providing for a school district in Thornton which began operating on September 1st that year. In 1930, local rancher John Hickey donated land to establish a park which became known as Hickey Park today. Incorporation as a town occurred on November 3rd of that year by ordinance of Arapaho County commissioners under the name of “Thornton” with James Fenton as its first Mayor On July 15th 1912 about sixty people including men, women and children camped out on private property east of present day mile marker 4 on Ute Creek until they could find enough water to drinkable quality.. They built their own fire ring and cooked over an open embers until morning when they withdrew because there was no food available (the Utes considered them scavengers). On October 6th 1912 JB Aspinwall drove his wagon down Ute Creek to check it out; he found food but no water so he returned home without stopping at Thornton The United States Postal Service operates mail services from Beatty through Pueblo into Apache County including parts of Arapaho County serving most populated areas within those counties plus parts of Canyon City and La Plata Counties

Thornton, Colorado is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. Thornton was founded on July 15, 1876 by J.D. Thornton and his brother John W. Thornton. The first post office at Thornton was established in 1879. The town has an estimated population of 5,000 people as of the 2010 census. The community is named after James Denton Thornton, a pioneer settler and member of the Denver City Council from 1878 to 1880 and again from 1889 to 1893. James Denton had been born in Tennessee in 1825 and came to Colorado with his father in 1857. He married Ann Hardy near Greeley on November 3, 1850 and homesteaded land near present-day Thornton on which he built a cabin that became known as the "Hardy Cabin". In 1870, James Denton surveyed part of what is now Arapaho County and donated land for the current town site; this donation led to its name change from "Greeley" to "Thornton". The first school in Thornton was built by Mrs. Coney (Catherine) Converse on Indian Creek Road just south of present-day Business Drive on October 8,1877; it served grades one through twelve until 1925 when it was moved to the new building adjacent to State High School which currently houses the high school administration offices. The original Main Street block east of Business Drive remains formally downtown today with several contributing buildings including: The First National Bank (now closed), Mrs Converse's Store/Livery stable (now home to Pueblo Pizza), Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (founded 1915), Holy Cross Catholic School #2 (opened 1953), Veterans Memorial Hall (formerly barracks used by US Air Force Academy cadets during World War II) It should be noted that many early residents were not From Colorado but rather Illinois or Iowa due primarily to railroads being available only through those states at that time Slavery did not exist in Colorado so citizens could not own slaves However few people actually lived there full time
