The Coast Guard has been a part of Thornton since 1919. The first Coast Guard station in Thornton was established on the shore of Lake Havasu City in 1912. In 1916, the First National Bank opened its doors on First Street and donated land for the first Coast Guard Station. The station was manned by a detachment of U.S. Marines until 1919 when the Coast Guard recruited its first civilian members from Thornton High School and other local businesses. In 1919, Captain John Ahern organized a Volunteer Patrol Unit to help patrol the coastline in response to increasing maritime crime and piracy. Soon after,Captain Ahern began charging for patrols as a way to generate revenue for the Coast Guard. In 1925, Captain Edward Barger authorized construction of a tower at First Street and West Street which would provide better coastal warning signals and allow law enforcement officers access to helicopters while they were patrolling the area. The tower was completed in 1929 and served as an important warning system until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. During World War II, Thornton became home to two Naval Air Station Aircraft Plant Units that manufactured Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers for USAAF aircrews during World War II (1941-1945). Other sources claim that Thornton also produced Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters (1946-1950), Douglas DC-3 Skytrain Airliners (1948), Buick Skylark taxi cabs (1959), HP Pavilion Mobile Office products (1984) – all without any evidence to support these claims beyond scattered anecdotes or Wikipedia entries

Thornton is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 705 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Thornton Central School District. Thornton is bordered by Aspen to the north, Westminster to the east, Canon City to the south and Garden City to the west. The first people in Thornton were Native Americans who camped along Ute Creek in present-day Thornton on July 24, 1816. They called themselves "Nahomi". In 1819, gold was found in what is now Greeley and Arapaho Counties and miners began arriving in droves. On January 1, 1886, Thornton was platted as a town by Peter J. Jarrett with Wm. Hodge as its first postmaster. In November 1912 Interstate 25 connected Thornton with Denver via a short stretch of road across Aspen Creek which had been built during the original transcontinental railroad construction project known as "The Great Northern" (now I-25). The townsfolk soon started calling this new highway "The Corridor". The name stuck and today it still refers to one of Thornton's main businesses - serving as an important link between both cities and their respective rural communities
