Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. Thornton is one of six towns in Arapahoe County, and it is the only community within Arapahoe County that does not have a incorporated village or city status. The first people to live in Thornton were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Thornton Springs and North Thornton Reservoir. The first settler in what is now Thornton was Jacob Sutter, who built a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street in 1868. In 1870, he married Anna Maria Baca and they started to build a home on land that would become their later home, Eastringen Place. They had two children beforeJacob Sutter died in 1872 at the age of 50 years old from an illness he contracted while hunting buffalo near North Thornton Reservoir. His wife continued to live there until her death in 1908; she was 90 years old when she died. In 1902, Samuel Hite started farming around what is now South Main Street and his farm became known as "Hite's Hill". He also built a house there which still stands today as part of Loop Boulevard Business Park north of downtown (along I-25). Around 1915–16, Harry Waddell bought some land adjacent to Hite's Hill from Samuel Hite and began to farm it himself; this area became known as "Waddell Ranch". Waddell sold his ranch back to Samuel Hite's son by marriage after World War II for $1 million dollars ($10 million current value). In 1946, Carlisle Jarrell purchased some land east of Loop Boulevard Business Park from Harry Waddell for $2 worth of cattle feeders per acre ($24 per square mile) because he believed that such an investment would lead to growth for the town center and its economy. When Jarrell died in 1951, his widow donated all remaining stock (14 feeds) in Circle K Shopping Center east of downtown (now called Towne Center Mall) to the government for use as roadsides but with no permanent buildings dedicated thereto until 1957 when a local bank building was dedicated as Jarrell Hall – then known simply as Circle K - . A new shopping mall was built west of Towne Center Mall on earthen tracks next door to Jarrell Hall between 1990 and 1992 following efforts by then-Mayor Augustus Dutton Sr., who saw potential development there due primarily to its location relative to I-25; however design issues with both mall construction AND lack of parking led developers Starwood Properties Incorporated & Co., LP & SUITE 100 LLC (later Marriott International Inc.) - owners/developers behind Towne Center Mall - eventually backs out due mainly TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CONCERN ABOUT LACK OF PARKING FOR RV VEHICLES IN THAT AREA... "circular k" has been incorrectly spelled "circle k" since 1970s!

The first settler in Thornton was John Thornton who arrived from England on July 6, 1876. He built a cabin on Brushy Creek near present-day Thornton High School. In 1877, he married Jane Harkness and they began raising children in their new home. In 1908,Thornton incorporated as an unincorporated village under the name of "Thorp." The growth of oil and gas production led to increased demand for housing within Thornton and its rapid annexation by other communities during the late 20th century; however,Thornton retains its unique character as a small town with its own schools and businesses located adjacent to each other on nearly two square miles (5 km²). Today's economy relies heavily upon petroleum extraction but there are also numerous local businesses that cater to tourists including several restaurants featuring fresh produce grown locally; downtown has been renovated twice since 2002 including adding a new library/museum complex with sculpture garden as well as updated public transportation options such as bike shops and farmers markets.
