Thorton is a small town in Goshen County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. Thornton is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. The town is named after George A. Thornton, an early settler and founder of the community. Thornton was founded in 1866 by George A. Thornton and his family as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Fort Collins and Denver. By 1870, Thornton had become a small farming community with a Methodist church and two-storey schoolhouse. In 1881, the army established Fort Stanton here to protect settlers from Native American attacks during the Apache Wars. The fort was abandoned in 1912 and most of its materials were used to build New Brighton Elementary School in that year. In 1938, State Highway 137 (now US 6) was built through town from US 6 north to State Road 116 (now CR 138). The road became known as Main Street when it crossed over into Goshen County from Weld County. In 1945, residents of nearby Clear Creek moved their homes onto FM 1740 east of town to make way for new Air Force Base construction; this removed much of what remained of Thornton's downtown business district. Since then, much redevelopment has taken place in downtown Thornton; including the opening of several large stores and restaurants along Main Street near Interstate 25 (the current name for US 6), among other businesses transformation projects throughout Downtown Thornton over time: The original white paint jobs on many businesses have long been lost to time but some still maintain their old finishes such as signage or door handles while others have had newer installations made all around them like light fixtures or window treatments
